Apple reaches 40 billion downloads

The Apple App Store and Google Play are racing to see who can offer the most apps and gather the most consumer loyalty for its app platform.

Apple happened to end 2012 with quite the upswing in the app market. In a press release on January 7th, Apple reported they had reached the benchmark of 40 billion unique downloads since the App Store’s inception. Amazingly, two billion of those downloads occurred in December alone.

Google Play has always been trying to play catch-up with Apple. In September of 2012, Google Play announced they had reached 25 million unique downloads of their apps. At the time, Google Play said it had 675,000 games and apps in its online store. By contrast, according to Apple’s press release, the App Store now boasts 775,000 apps, plus another 300,000 apps specifically made for iPad.
